Philippos Yiapanis: A Visionary Sculptor at ART.Cy

ART.Cy is honored to welcome Philippos Yiapanis, one of Cyprus' most distinguished sculptors, to this year's event. Renowned for his evocative bronze and marble creations, Yiapanis has made an indelible mark on the island’s artistic landscape.

Born in Famagusta in 1957, Yiapanis’ artistic journey was profoundly shaped by the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, which forced him to leave his hometown at the age of 17. His passion for sculpture began during high school, but it was not until the age of 35 that he fully dedicated himself to his craft. Entirely self-taught, he transformed his hobby into a lifelong vocation, driven by confidence and determination.

Yiapanis’ work draws inspiration from nature, the female form, and Greek mythology. His sculptures, with their flowing curves and dynamic silhouettes, often depict birds, snails, fish, and legendary figures. His artistic excellence has earned him international recognition, including participation in the Florence Biennale and an award in the International Olympic Landscape Sculpture Contest, where his piece Olympic Spirit was celebrated among the top 110 entries. In 2014, the International Olympic Committee honored him with the Sports & Arts award, acknowledging his contribution to the intersection of art and athletics.

His works are showcased in prominent public spaces across Cyprus, including the Cape Greko Millennium Monument and The Phoenix at Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium. He has also created significant commemorative monuments honoring Cyprus’ history and heritage.

Beyond his sculptures, Yiapanis has established Art Nest, a museum and arts center within the Mikri Salamina Sculpture Park in Fasoula. Designed by architect Aggelos Savvides, this space symbolizes artistic and personal discovery and serves as a cultural hub connecting Cyprus with the international art community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Philippos Yiapanis for his invaluable contribution to ART.Cy. His dedication to art and cultural preservation continues to inspire and enrich the artistic dialogue both locally and internationally.
