The Cyprus Institute Andreas Pittas Art Characterisation Laboratories was among the featured sessions at ART.Cy 2026, presenting an insightful masterclass that explored the intersection of art, science, and digital technology. The session stood out for its innovative approach, engaging audiences through real-world case studies and advanced methodologies applied to cultural heritage.
Led by Athanasios Koutoupas and Nikolas Bakirtzis, the masterclass introduced a comprehensive framework for art characterisation and digital documentation. Drawing from the work of APAC Labs, it demonstrated how techniques such as advanced imaging, material analysis, and 3D documentation are combined into an integrated pipeline, connecting micro-scale material evidence with broader spatial interpretation across artworks and heritage sites.
The session highlighted how these scientific approaches support conservation, enhance interpretation, and contribute to the long-term preservation and cultural value of both artistic and archaeological works.
Operating under the Cyprus Institute, APAC Labs is a leading research facility dedicated to the scientific study of cultural heritage, using advanced, non-destructive analytical techniques to support conservation, authentication, and the deeper understanding of artworks and historical materials.
ART.Cy was pleased to include this masterclass in its 2026 programme and thanks The Cyprus Institute APAC Labs for its valuable contribution.
